Jockey Full Of Bourbon

July 27, 2009

Rain Dogs is a good album to listen to during thunderstorms, walking around Chinatown late at night, and when you’re simultaneously reading Bukowski. Also, whenever your friends tell you something creepy that’s just happened you could put on Rain Dogs and make them feel even more uncomfortable. On the other hand, you could just listen to it whenever. Serves plenty of purposes.

From 1985′s Rain Dogs:

Real Gone‘s a good one too.

Buy ‘em.

zomby new album
Wrote about Where Were U in ’92? a while ago on the old blog, thought I might mention it again.

MP3: Tears in the Rain – Zomby (YSI)

Buy it here. Keep an eye out for Zomby‘s One Foot Ahead Of The Other EP out in August (pre-order). It’s probably staggered, dark, and really good. Here’s a very Godzilla influenced video of Zomby’s new track Godzilla.

Video: Godzilla – Zomby.

An interesting b-side remix off AC’s Summertime Clothes single:
MP3: Summertime Clothes (Zomby’s Analog Lego Mix) – Animal Collective (YSI)(BUY)

From 1961′s
The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra

If you’ve yet to watch Space is The Place I suggest you watch it. The second time round I turned down the dialogue and played something else in the background. Try it.

Hail Sun Ra!

Hail cold temperatures in July!

Eating Us

July 14, 2009

eatingusbig
The electronic psych band based out of Pittsburgh, Black Moth Super Rainbow, released their fourth album Eating Us this past May. It’s a short album, only 36 minutes long. It’s a little less lo-fi compared to their other albums, and lacks the obscure song titling (I mean, the titles are still cool, there’s just no Neon Syrup for the Cemetery Sisters). Eating Us is what the background music would generally consist of if you resided in a fancy kaleidoscope with music playing capabilities. If you’re into colorful, interesting, and psychotropic tracks I suggest you go pick it up. However, if you wanted to get the limited edition “Hairy” version of the album (complete with synthetic hair inside the CD sleeve), I regret to inform you that it’s sold out. You can pick the album (and their previous albums and EP’s) up on the band’s site.

From Eating Us:
MP3:Twin of Myself – Balck Moth Super Rainbow (YSI)

From Dandelion Gum:
MP3: Spinning Cotton Candy in a Shack Made of Shingles – Black Moth Super Rainbow (YSI)

Went to Busch Gardens whilst in Florida. It was sweet, waited on line for the front row of all the roller coasters and snuck a disposable camera onto them. Rest assured, I conquered the G-Force and that film is in the process of being developed. I’ll post the photos up here when I get them back and when I scan them, which could take forever. Here are some random one’s in the meantime.

Enjoy your Tuesday,

Deadbeat Summer

Neon Indian
Right on. That’s what I feel like my summer is turning out to be.

You’re probably not hearing much about Neon Indian (VEGA‘s side project) yet, but I think you definitely will as soon as their album Psychic Chasms drops, mark my words. Reminds me of what a lo-fi version of Cut Copy mixed with SMD would sound like. Psychedelic synths, perfectly used reverb, awesome vocals and lyrics, cool random samples. Get into it.

MP3: 6669 (I don’t know if you know) – Neon Indian (YSI)
MP3: Deadbeat Summer – Neon Indian (YSI)
MP3:Should have taken acid with you – Neon Indian (YSI)

Comes out Oct 13th on Lefse Records.

nick
Ah, Nick Drake phases, the best of them all.. There’s a few ways you can go after listening to Syd Barrett solo on repeat for a few days straight (which I’d been doing). 1. You can go the Donovan route, which is a slightly prissy route if you ask me. 2. You can go the first Pink Floyd album (The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn) with Syd leading route. 3. Or you can get into more disconsolately made songs, like Nick Drake’s works, which I’d chosen. I’d gotten quite preoccupied with Family Tree at some point last year. Somehow raw recordings of Nick accompanied by sparce vocals from his sister and mom make me feel all mellow and really good inside. Not to mislead you, the songs are quite saddening if all you’ve been doing is listening to dance music. Mix it up for a bit, it’s good for your ears.

Buy Family Tree and Nick’s other albums here.

Youtube: Tracks with his Mom and Sister’s vocals.

MP3: Been Smoking Too Long – Nick Drake
MP3: If You Leave Me – Nick Drake

How bout some Sebadoh!
