August 28, 2009

the-fugees
From 1996′s The Score. You already know.

MP3: Zealots – Fugees (YSI)

Pick up The Score here.

The sample, of course, from The Flamingos 1959 cover (one of the best covers) of I Only Have Eyes For You.

Always reminds me of A Bronx Tale… Pick the vinyl up here. Only $18 bucks. Ain’t half bad!

Deux Helix

Coolest new sound I’ve heard in a while. Sounds like a wicked combination of heavier electro, really creepy late 70′s horror film scores, awkward chimes, and outer space. Finally someone’s combined these things. Wtf, why’d it take this long! What’s wrong with everyone! And they even have better artwork than half of the more popular electro artists. Yes to Deux Helix.

MP3: Near Death Experience – Deux Helix (YSI)

Distant Roots

From Bar 9‘s April 2009 release, Bar 9 In Da Mix. The two disc set houses some pretty fine Dubstep basslines mixed by Bar 9 from various artists (list of artists on Discogs) The bonus disc is mainly Bar 9′s stuff and is especially good. Here’s a bit from the bonus CD. Pick the full release up @Boomkat. Murky, pitch dark, nice.

Here’s a bit from October of last year. (October is almost here again, I spotted Halloween masks recently at a Duane Reade, wtf) Midnight Request Line was remixed by a few artists (Some being Switch & Hot Chip), the remix I liked most however was Mala(of Digital Mystikz)’s. Pick Midnight Request Line up and the remixes @ Boomkat.

MP3: Midnight Request Line (Mala Remix) – Skream (YSI)

Bring The Lights Down

August 25, 2009

jazzmatazz
From Caspa & Soundproof’s Bring The Lights Down 12″ Vinyl. The 12″ has two separate, different mixes of a vocal sample from rapper Guru. I think I prefer Caspa’s mix, less choppy, less happy, fairly dark. Bass drops 1:20 in. Pick it up here.

MP3: Bring The Lights Down (Caspa Remix) – Caspa (YSI)

From 1993′s Jazzmatazz Vol. 1, one of the first albums to combine a live jazz band with hip hop production and rap:
MP3: Sights in the City – Guru (YSI)
MP3: Trust Me – Guru (YSI)

Pick that up here.

Sebadoh

August 6, 2009

Sebadoh
Sebadoh (Eric Gaffney and founding Dinosaur Jr. bass player Lou Barlow) put out a handful of records during the 90′s and 1989. Here are a few b-sides off the 1990 Asshole 7″ (which was limited to 1000 copies.. I’d suggest this site if you want to poke around for a one..), the songs on the album were written by Barlow possibly about J. Mascis after he was kicked out of Dinosaur Jr.

The tracks below also appear on the rerelease of their 1989 debut album, The Freed Man (rereleased by Domino in 2005 with 52 tracks, as opposed to the original 31) I’d go pick up the rerelease, has a bunch of short, lo-fi, slightly out of tune but good nonetheless tracks.

MP3: Julienne – Sebadoh (YSI)
MP3: Hung Up – Sebadoh (YSI)

Gonna get me a working cassette player tomorrow.
