If I ever meet any of the Sons I’m recommending the induction of Ron Perlman

January 13, 2010

The Sons of Lee Marvin, founded by Jim Jarmusch, is a secret society devoted to.. Lee Marvin. In order to gain access to the club, you must possess physical characteristics of Lee Marvin.

Jim Jarmusch (Founding member)

Tom Waits

From Rain Dogs:

MP3: Tango Till They’re Sore – Tom Waits

Nick Cave

First track from Let Love In, second from Junkyard:

MP3: Red Right Hand – Nick Cave

MP3: She’s Hit – The Birthday Party

Neil Young

From my favorite Neil Young album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere:

MP3: Down By The River – Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Iggy Pop

This version, from Raw Power:

MP3: Shake Appeal – The Stooges

John Boorman (Director of Zardoz- yes!!)

Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, etc.)

Thurston Moore

From A Thousand Leaves:

MP3: Sunday – Sonic Youth

I wish I knew someone personally that looked like Lee Marvin. Or maybe I do.. I guess I’ll have to think it over. I always thought Ron Perlman looked relatively like Tom Waits.. (Perlman is best known for Hellboy, he was also in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s dystopian French fantasy film The City of Lost Children, which is amazing if you’ve not seen it yet! Clip is below.) If I ever meet any of the Sons I’m recommending the induction of Perlman. I suppose his eyebrow structure isn’t quite up to par (going by Lee standards) How did Neil Young make it in?

Before I sign off let me remind you to sign Conan’s petition. I think the world will probably end pretty soon. Haiti just took on a 7.0 earthquake, Florida is freezing (literally), Jay Leno took back Conan’s slot, reality television has hit an all-time low, robots are likely to turn on us at any point now.. it’s all dwindling down, and fast. (I just hope it doesn’t happen before the season premier of Lost/)

You know, I was also thinking earlier about how the world would be if instead of physical warfare governments just solved things via modern warfare II.. it would make so much more sense.

Anyway,

Have a good evening/morning,
Danz

Damn

So bummed. Bought a MicrokKorg for Christmas and have to return it today. (Because, well, am ultimately broke) Ah well, someday, someday…

An appropriate song. When’s a new album coming? I wonder..

(Clips, trailers for documentaries)

(Gimme Shelter may be one of my favorite documentaries ever)

(This bit from DiG! Includes my favorite (perhaps) line of all time)

(Dylan and Donovan.. the 1967 film Don’t Look Back makes you realize just how pretentious, yet cool Dylan was (not that he isn’t both currently)).

Found this on Digg today, the caption was, “If Jesus had a cat.”:

And that’s that, it was more of a copy & paste youtube embedding codes night rather than an upload night.

Season 1, Episode 1.

Affirmative,

Here’s a bit from Sun City Girls. Their records typically incorporated lyrics that relied heavily on their interests in mysticism, paranormal topics (especially UFOs), religious cults and other esoterica, often also manifested in their song titles, lyrics and album art. They’ve released an incredible amount, going though their discography.. It seems almost impossible to ever acquire absolutely everything, considering some releases are cassette only. Man, I’d like to get my hands on some of the cassettes! Anyway, here’s a bit, going by year of release..

From Midnight Cowboys From Ipanema (1986):

MP3: Me And Mrs. Jones – Sun City Girls

From Torch of the Mystics (1990) (Probably their best known album):

MP3: Cafe Batik – Sun City Girls

From You’re Never Alone With A Cigarette (Sun City Girls Singles Volume 1) (1990):

MP3: Harmful Little Armful (For Will Shatter) – Sun City Girls

It is, after all, The King‘s 75th birthday. In honor of that, here are a couple of vinyl rips. (Mono, 7″) (The above artwork is actually from the CD, not the 7″) Big Elvis fan? Look what I’ve stumbled upon at $1500! That vinyl is 50 years old.. jeeze.

MP3: You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me (Mono, 7″ Version) – Elvis Presley

MP3: If I Can Dream (Mono, 7″ Version) – Elvis Presley

Dev Hynes/Lighspeed Champion recently recorded a version of Elvis’ Devil In Disguise at legendary Avatar Studios! It’s amazing! As is the video, which was put up today (of course!). Lightspeed Champion’s upcoming record Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You comes out on Domino the 15th of February.

One more… this one was originally written by Arthur Gunter and recorded (by him) in 1954 on Excello Records. Elvis later covered it the following year on Sun Records.. the fourth issue of a Presley record by Sun, AND the first song recorded by Elvis to appear on a national chart! (The above are actually Sun Records coasters!)

MP3: Baby Let’s Play House – Elvis Presley

Alright that’s it! Except one more thing, Germs is tonight. Flyer is on the right, click to enlarge!

Hermeto, etc.

January 8, 2010

A bit from Hermeto Pascoal‘s Brazilian Adventure (1988), which is actually his solo debut (1970) reissued and renamed, the original was self-titled. Read his bio if you’ve got time, click his name above. “He initially caught the international public’s attention with an appearance on Miles Davis’s 1971 album Live-Evil, which featured Pascoal on several pieces (which he also composed). [2] Davis has said that Pascoal was “the most impressive musician in the world”. Second track listed below is really somewhat creepy, but amazing too. Buy here.

From Brazilian Adventure:

MP3: Coalhada – Hermeto Pascoal

MP3: Velorio feat Flora Purim and Airto – Hermeto Pascoal

Here’s a couple from Amnesty‘s Free Your Mind: The 700 West Sessions. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 (At.. well, The 700 West Recording Studio, Indianapolis, IN)– but only just issued for the first time quite recently. So great! Amazing horn parts.. unfortunately there’s not much to be found on the group, I’m currently digging around. Here’s a link to buy.

MP3: Lord Help Me – Amnesty

MP3: Three Cheers For My Baby – Amnesty

A bit from Motown recording artist Mary Wells. The tracks below are from her second album, released in 1962: The One Who Really Loves You.

(Vinyl rips)

MP3: You Beat Me To The Punch – Mary Wells

MP3: Strange Love – Mary Wells

Here’s a track from her album Mary Wells Sings My Guy. Interesting fact: It Had To Be You was originally published in 1924! Incredible. So many covers.

MP3: It Had To Be You – Mary Wells

Buy both Mary Wells albums here. Still most likely my favorite version from anyone..

And last but not least..

Racy! Some from Gal Costa‘s 1973 album, Índia (a truly amazing album) Buy it here. Ah, bossa..

(Vinyl rips)

MP3: Da Maior Importância – Gal Costa

Jack Nicholson

January 6, 2010

Here are some clips/trailers for all of the Jack Nicholson movies I like along with the ones I like slightly better. Ah man. I may favor Nicholson as an all-time favorite over Sean Connery.. but only slightly, Jack hasn’t done quite as many sci-fi flicks.

Psych-Out (1968) (This technically belongs below in my personal favorites, I just wanted it to be the first one you saw.)

Easy Rider (1969)

The Rebel Rousers (1970)

Five Easy Pieces (1970)

The Last Detail (1973)

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981) (Trying to get through the book itself currently..)

Terms of Endearment (1983)

Something’s Gotta Give (2003)

Personal favorites:

Chinatown (1974)

Professione: reporter (1975)

Tommy (1975) (Solely because of Jack Nicholson’s singing bit, quite painful but awesome, nonetheless)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

The Shining (1980) (Of course!)

The Witches of Eastwick (1987)

Batman Trailer (1989)

Mars Attacks! (1996) (Has anyone been to the Tim Burton exhibit yet at the MoMa?)

As Good as It Gets (1997)

(Oh man, Helen Hunt! Mad About You! Oh my god! (One of the shows, along with Seinfeld, that made me want to move to New York).

So, not a big fan of some of the later films he’s done in his career, although frankly his great films cancel the not-so-great ones out. I actually didn’t think About Shmidt was all that bad, just am being lazy about posting.. Am I alone in not enjoying A Few Good Men (even though it did have Kavin Bacon..)?

Off to watch one at random. I’d be doing something more productive if I had a cell phone, which I’m going without ’til Thursday.

Take care for now,
Danz

A good ‘ol cover

January 6, 2010

A great cover, in my opinion. I actually don’t think I could ever get tired of The White Stripes to be honest, think what you will. The Dusty Springfield version is epic. The song below, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, was originally written and composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and first recorded by R&B singer Tommy Hunt. Eventually it would turn into a #3 hit for Dusty come 1966. Buy The White Stripe’s version here (link directs you to the single with the b-side: I’m Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman (Live On John Peel)), buy Dusty’s here.

MP3: I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself – Dusty Springfield

MP3: I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself – The White Stripes

Man.. Elephant is such a thoroughly good album (I literally have been listening to it all day, more specifically track 10: Little Acorns and track 13: Girl You Have No Faith in Medicine). On a side note, The White Stripes‘ documentary, Under Great White Northern Lights, directed by Emmett Malloy, is available for pre-order on their site. The link is located above!
